ClearWind Farm is located in central North Carolina within 30 minutes of Chapel Hill, Durham, and Burlington and within 15 minutes of Hillsborough and Mebane. The farm features a 130x66 foot indoor arena, an outdoor round-pen and an outdoor arena. We have nine horses, including several rescue horses, of varying temperaments and sizes that we use in the psychotherapy sessions.
The farm is owned and operated by Matt and Suzanne Case, a creative husband-and-wife team who have been conducting equine assisted psychotherapy sessions together since 2004. They were trained and certified by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA), the leading professional association in this emerging field. Matt and Suzanne utilize the team model developed by EAGALA that draws upon the skills of both a licensed mental health therapist and an experienced equine specialist in every session.
Suzanne, the equine specialist on the team, has been working with horses for over 30 years as trainer, teacher (BHSAI certified instructor), rider and caregiver. Her deep belief in the connection and understanding between horses and people has lead her to adopt rescue horses and co-facilitate EAP sessions. What drew Suzanne to EAP is that the horses are free to simply be themselves; it's not about horsemanship, it's about the relationship between two beings and the possibilities that might evolve from this powerful connection.
Matt, a Licensed Professional Counselor with a private practice in Mebane, is the therapist on the team. He has been working with children, adults and families since 2000 and he has a special interest in parenting, mindfulness, and stepfamilies. What has most impressed Matt about EAP is how it brings to the surface clients’ struggles and strengths with an ease and clarity seldom seen in traditional psychotherapy. In addition, the interactions with the horses provide a workshop for clients to try out new ways of thinking, feeling and interacting. You can learn more Matt’s approach to therapy at his listing on the Good Therapy website.
